Basel Christmas Market

Basel has a deep-rooted tradition as Switzerland’s most beautiful and largest Christmas city, and is well worth a visit every year. Not only the well-preserved Old Town is radiant in the warm Christmas light, but the shops and the facades of many buildings glitter with a golden glow. Roughly a hundred tall pine trees border the streets and stand like brightly lit sentinels pointing the way for the visitor. Particularly recommended is the Christmas market, which is being held not only on Barfüsserplatz, but also on Münsterplatz – one of the most beautiful squares in Basel.

The Basel Christmas Market can be found on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, right in the center of the city and at the heart of the festively decorated Old Town.

Claraplatz

A smaller Christmas market is located on the opposite side of the Rhine River on Claraplatz in Kleinbasel. The market here has longer opening hours – daily from 11 am to 9 pm.

Münsterplatz

The second large Christmas Market in Basel is the Weihnachtsmarkt on Münsterplatz. Here around 40 stalls offer Christmas wares. The spacing here is more generous and the square is completely flat making it easier to navigate for families with strollers. From the square, travelers have wonderful views not only of the lovely Romanesque-Gothic Basel Minster but also of the Rhine River.

Basel

Basel is a city on the Rhine River in northwest Switzerland. Basel's position at the juncture of the French, German and Swiss borders adds to its multicultural appeal, and it's perhaps the place where Switzerland's Franco-Germanic roots are most evident, although the dominant language spoken is Swiss-German. It's easy to spend a day wandering the cobbled streets of the lofty and beautiful Altstadt in Grossbasel (Greater Basel) on the Rhine's south bank before crossing the Mittlere Brücke to Kleinbasel (Little Basel) for a more 'everyday' vibe and riverside al fresco dining.

Barfüsserplatz

The Basler Weihnachtsmarkt on Barfüsserplatz adjacent to the main shopping streets of central Basel is the largest and busiest Christmas market in the city. Here around 140 stalls sell Christmas-related crafts and items as well as a range of food and drink. Artists are often at work and happy to answer questions. Stalls are fairly tightly packed at places making the market feeling crowded even when not particularly busy.

Christmas Markets

Basel has three main Christmas markets: the largest is on Barfüsserplatz in the old town, a new market next to the cathedral on Münsterplatz, and a smaller market on the right bank of the Rhine on Claraplatz. These markets are within easy walking distance of each other and in between Basel impresses with beautifully decorated shop windows and buildings.
